European Parliament Schools Award for St. Farnan's
We are delighted to announce that St. Farnan's has been awarded the European Parliament Ambassador Schools (EPAS) award for a second year in a row.
The Transition Year students worked on the EPAS programme since September as part of their European Studies module and while the judging panel was unable to visit the school in recent weeks, they were very impressed with the online application and presentation submitted by the school.
At the beginning of their TY year, the class coordinated the celebration of the European Day of Languages in the school and organised a Table Quiz and an Art Competition for the first year students.
While learning about the history, function and work of the European Union, the students also maintained and updated an EU Information Point in the school and visited the European Parliament's Offices in Dublin. As part of their focus on democracy, they enjoyed a talk with local TD, Martin Heydon and also visited Dáil Éireann.
Ms. Flanagan was also one of a small group of teachers from Ireland asked to attend a teachers conference in the European Parliament in Brussels in November.
An additional activity undertaken by the class this year was their preparation for and participation in the EU Model Debate which was held in Dublin Castle in February. The whole class researched climate change issues and worked on their debating skills and then Cal, Ruby and Eleanor represented the school with great distinction on the day, speaking on behalf of the Netherlands. A highlight for the team and for their supporters was meeting the Ambassador to Ireland from the Netherlands, who was most impressed with our performance.
Although the prize giving ceremony cannot take place this May as scheduled, we look forward to receiving our second plaque for the school and our certificates in the autumn.
