St. Farnan’s win in Irish Seed Schools Supporter Package Competition!
Room 26 (MLU) on behalf of St. Farnan’s Post Primary School have recently been one of ten schools selected as a winner in the Irish Seed Savers Schools Supporter Package Competition! The competition took place in January when we were asked to send a selection of pictures showing our students engagement with gardening in the school setting.
The prize is filled with many goodies such as a copy of The Year-Round Organic School Garden Book which was written by several key organic gardening school educators including Irish Seed Savers Education Co-coordinator, Aine Ní Fhlatharta. As part of this prize, Aine, will make contact in the springtime to arrange for a suitable time to engage with St Farnan’s and Room 26 students to support our school gardening with advice and guidance.
We are also pleased to receive the Irish Seed Savers Winter 2020 Newsletter, as well as the Junior Newsletter Winter 2020 and 2021 Seed Catalogue. Now that we are an Irish Seed Savers School Supporter, we can select 7 seed varieties for free.
The main objective of Irish Seed Savers is to protect Ireland’s food crop heritage for future generations. Their work focuses on the conservation of heirloom vegetable seeds and Irish heritage apple trees. In recent years we have expanded the scope of our work to include crop varieties from all over the world that are suitable for Ireland’s unique growing conditions.
Irish Seed Savers Association maintains the country’s only public seed bank, with over 600 non-commercially available varieties of seed. They also house the national collection of Irish heritage apple trees in their orchards, with over 180+ unique varieties. Throughout the year they run a wide range of workshops, host school tours, and encourage communities to come together to share seeds and plants, all with the aim of promoting Ireland’s
biodiversity.
The following is a selection of pictures included with the entry. Well done to Ms. Moloney for her work on this! 🌸 🌱 🪴
