Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century in St Farnan's

1st Feb 2024

Teachers in St. Farnan’s are taking part in TL21. The TL21 Programme is a workshop based Continuing Professional Development programme for teachers and school leaders. Its aim is to examine our teaching and learning practices and to see how we can improve them for the benefit of our students. The programme is research-led.

The focus this year is on the exam literacy of 2nd year students. The participating teachers have identified that exam verbs such as ‘explain’, ‘compare’, and ‘evaluate’ can pose a challenge for students, especially those with existing literacy difficulties.

Data was gathered on 2nd year students that supported the teachers’ belief that this was an area worth working on. Teachers have collaborated and attended workshops to help to come up with strategies for improving exam word literacy among the 2nd year cohort. These strategies are currently being used and later, data will be collected to check the effectiveness of the work done.

We hope that 2nd year students will have greater confidence in exam situations and gain improved results in future years. It is intended that each department could have ten key exam verbs explicitly taught in their subject as part of their yearly plans.
